Deuter Kid Comfort Adult Comfort: 9/10
The Deuter Pro child carrier backpack is among the most comfortable of any packs on the market today. It certainly is the most plush.
The shoulder straps and hipbelt are well padded with perforated mesh. The back panel is equipped with a tension mesh panel that has direct contact with your back, but allows for good airflow keeping you cool on longer outings. We love this feature.
Although the waistbelts are well padded for most child carrier backpacks, the Deuter Pro model is just a little extra luxurious. It also have a more natural fit than most packs.
The torso and shoulder adjustments are also a breeze. After unlocking a clasp behind the mesh back panel, you can easily slide the shoulder apparatus that holsters the shoulder straps up or down to fit your body type. This is a very similar system to the one that Osprey utilizes, but quite a bit different than both Thule and Kelty.
Lastly, this baby backpack carrier is equipped with good load lifters located near the shoulders. These are critical to ensure a good fit, and proper transfer of weight down your hips and lower body. Simply reach behind your head after the pack is fully loaded and on your back, and adjust the load lifters accordingly.
Deuter Kid Comfort Pro Fit Adjustability: 8/10
The primary adjustments for adult fit are made on the torso as discussed in the adult comfort section above. This baby backpack can accommodate a wide range of torso lengths utilizing the sliding back length adjustments. A great resource for sizing a backpack is from REI and can be found here.
We have noticed that friends and family enjoy trying out the child carrier backpack, as it provides a unique, intimate bonding experience with the child. Having a pack that can quickly be adjusted to fit adults from short to tall is very helpful in this scenario!
However, one feature we wish Deuter included is a hipbelt extender. Several brands including Osprey and Thule have top rated child carrier backpacks that incorporate hipbelt extenders. This feature allows adults with a larger waist to be fully accommodated with a proper fit.
Although this feature certainly isn’t a deal breaker, it is worth considering depending on who plans to wear the backpack.
Deuter Kid Comfort Pro Child Comfort: 10/10
As mentioned above, the Deuter Kid Comfort Pro is the most plush, luxurious child carrier backpack on the market today.
Let’s start with the child cockpit area. It is designed with an extended head rest panel behind the child’s head. Although we don’t love this design because it makes the pack larger, we do appreciate what it does for child comfort. It provides extra space for the child to rest their head when it comes nap time.
We also appreciate the material chosen for the child cockpit. Children can get quite warm while in a pack all day. However, Deuter decided to use perforated mesh in the child seating area instead of a warmer felt material which makes for a cooler ride. This will certainly help keep your child comfortable and ensure they don’t sweat as much.
This pack also includes standard features such as foot stirrups and a removable and washable drool pad.
Deuter Kid Comfort Pro Child Safety: 9/10
The Deuter Kid Comfort Pro receives excellent safety ratings for various reasons.
The first reason being that this pack comes with a five point child safety harness. The shoulder straps for the child are, like the rest of the pack, fully padded utilizing perforated mesh. The harness and straps are easy to adjust and lock into place with high quality buckles and clips.
The frame itself is made from lightweight aluminum and provides a strong, rigid structure from which the rest of the child carrier backpack is built. Behind the pack is a kickstand that pops out when you want to load or unload the pack. The pack is built so that it can’t roll over, but just be sure to put the pack down on a flat surface, and be sure to monitor as the child gets larger. After a few years, they can kick around quite a bit and destabilize the pack when it is on the ground.
Deuter Kid Comfort Pro Sun Protection: 7/10
You may have noticed on this site that we really appreciate a high quality sun shade on a baby backpack. The Deuter Kid Comfort Pro does comes with one, so that is great! A sunshade really is a must for any child carrier backpack.
The sunshade is fully integrated and built into the pack, accessed by a rear zipper. You simply unzip, pull the shade up and forward, and attach it next to the adult shoulders by with two clips. We appreciate an integrated sunshade as you will likely use it on every trip.
We do like that the Deuter Kid Comfort Pro has a bit more side sun coverage than many of the other brand’s, although, the side panels could be still be larger to provide complete sun protection. For the backpack with the best sunshade, have a look at the Osprey Poco Plus.
Lastly, the Deuter designed sunshade just seems less secure than some of the other brands currently on the market.
Deuter Kid Comfort Pro Nap Effectiveness: 9/10
We really like the nap potential in this pack. And nap potential is critical. In fact, it is a large part of the reason to buy a child carrier backpack. Most children fall asleep at some point in the pack, providing recuperative rest for your child and a peaceful, quiet experience for the parent.
With the Deuter Kid Comfort Pro, the child has a great place to rest their head, either backwards or forward. When leaning forward, they can rest their head on the soft, removable drool pad. If they prefer to lean backwards, the over-sized head rest works perfect for a nap.
The small side panels on this sunshade provide another way to rest their head, similar to a hammock.
During nap time, one of our go-tos is to place a phone with a white noise app next to our child. This provides a even, consistent background level to help ensure the child takes a full nap. Otherwise, if you are going in and out of stores with continually changing noises, or walking along the trail with groups passing by talking loudly, children are likely to wake up. Not good for anyone to disrupt nap time.
Any child big or small should have no issues getting a good nap in this pack!
Outstanding Sunshade
As mentioned above, the sunshade design helps your child nap better!
Compressible Child Cockpit
Compressible child cockpit allows you to expand for larger kids to ensure comfort, or compress for small children to ensure they are snug and cozy for nap time
Mesh Side Panels
Allows for great airflow and keeps your child cool during naptime
Upper Stuff Pocks
Provides a spot to put a phone with a white noise app - great for helping kids nap longer!
Deuter Kid Comfort Pro Gear Storage: 7/10
We have mixed reviews on the storage capabilities of the Deuter Kid Comfort Pro.
We do appreciate a removable day pack which on this pack, holds 10-12 L of gear and is nestled into the lower storage compartment. This allows you to share the load with someone else, or leave it home entirely if you plan to be in a crowd and prefer a slimmer profile.
However, on this Deuter model, the removable day pack sits inside the primary storage compartment, and both cant be used at the same time. This is a bit of a bummer, and really limits the amount of gear you can take with you.
This baby backpack does offer some other nice storage options, however. On both sides of the hipbelt are zippered compartments, great for small toys, chapstick, keys, etc. On both sides of the child are mesh stuff pockets. These are great for child toys or even better, a phone with a white noise app when it is nap time.
Lastly, there is a large stuff area with a drawstring near the top of the pack in the rear. This is a great area to place extra layers and rain jackets.
One nitpick with the Deuter storage design: most are “stuff” areas with drawstrings. We prefer zippered pockets. Just too much risk of something falling out with stuff pockets. We vote zippers.
Deuter Kid Comfort Pro Extra Features: 9/10
The Dueter Kid Comfort Pro has multiple extra features including side entry, sturdy grab handles and a rain cover which are quite nice!
A side entry option (as opposed to top only) can be a game changers after a long hike! As the child gets larger, you’ll notice it is sometimes difficult to put them in, and take them out of the pack. After unbuckling a clasp, you simply fold open the child cockpit flaps, and the child can walk in on their own. This is particularly useful after a long day. You are naturally tired after carrying a 40 lb pack for 8 miles, so, it is much appreciated when your little passenger can walk out on their own vs. struggling to get them out of the pack. Seems like a minor detail, but after going through this several times, you will know what we mean.
This pack includes two sturdy grab handles. These are primarily used to help put the pack on and take it off when fully loaded.
Lastly, you can purchase a separate rain cover. We love a rain cover! Not only does it help keep your child dry during storms, but it works well to keep your child warm in the winter. It also helps block the wind if you are hiking at altitude. Have a look at the rain cover here!
Deuter Kid Comfort Pro Durability: 9/10
Deuter has been making high quality backpacks for years, and they are certainly built to last. Their child carriers are no different in that regard. When it first arrives, after looking it over, you’ll know it will have no problem holding up.
This child carrier backpack also comes with a limited lifetime warranty to give you peace of mind.
Deuter Kid Comfort Pro Value: 6/10
The Deuter Kid Comfort Pro is a premium child carrier backpack that comes with a premium price tag as well. Coming in around $330, this pack is certainly on the higher end of child carrier backpacks. Although it gets great ratings for child comfort and safety, it lacks some features other child carrier backpacks offer in this price range, and thus comes up a bit short on our value rating.
Deuter Kid Comfort Pro Summary
This pack receives an 83/100 from The Kid Packer based on all that was discussed above. This baby backpack is super comfortable, but lacks a few features we expect in a top of the line product. From the lack of storage capacity to the top end price tag, the Deuter Kid Comfort Pro falls to the middle of the pack in our ratings. Don’t get us wrong, this is a solid pack that has much to offer. We just prefer a few other backpacks at this price range.
If you plan to use your child carrier backpack frequently and on full day trips, you might want to consider other packs with more storage options, such as the Osprey Poco Plus or the Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Elite. If you plan to primarily use the pack around town where storage is less of a concern, this might be the pack for you!
However, with a 83/100 overall score, it is certainly a pack that will treat you and your child well.
For other strong competitors that offer premium features, have a look at the Osprey Poco Plus (Review), Thule Sapling Elite (Review), or Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Elite (Review).
