Deuter Kid Comfort Venture Overall

Deuter is known for high quality outdoor gear and this is certainly true for their Kid Comfort Child Carrier Series. Deuter’s latest addition (late 2021) is the Deuter Kid Comfort Venture Child Carrier. The Kid Comfort Venture is marketed as Deuter’s ‘value-driven’ model.

Deuter Kid Comfort Venture Adult Comfort: 6/10

Deuter Kid Comfort Venture Adult Comfort Rating

The Deuter Kid Comfort Venture may not be as plush as other Deuter child carrier models, but this pack is comfortable for most adult wearers. The Deuter Venture includes Deuter’s VariQuick torso adjustment system which is a quick and effective way to adjust the height of the shoulder straps. This simple adjustment enables this baby carrier backpack to be comfortably worn by most sized adults.

The Deuter Venture child carrier backpack includes a Contact Back System that is primarily foam with a 3D Airmesh cover. This system allows for more contact with the wearer’s back as opposed to other Deuter designs that allow for more ventilation. Some may prefer the contact back system in that it feels quite secure and flush with your back. We typically prefer more ventilation to keep the wearer cool.

During our Deuter Kid Comfort Venture Review we found the shoulder straps and hip belt padding are slightly less plush than other packs on the market, but adequate for most wearers. The hip belt design contours to the body well and includes small adjustment straps to customize the fit. This model does not include hip belt extenders to accommodate larger waists with extra comfort but does fit most waist sizes.

The Deuter Kid Comfort Venture includes excellent load lifters to help distribute weight from your shoulders to your hips. This baby carrier backpack also includes child cockpit compression straps to keep the child’s weight closer to the wearer to help with stability. The Deuter Kid Comfort Venture weighs 6 pounds which is lighter than many higher end models.

Deuter Kid Comfort Venture Fit Adjustability: 8/10

Deuter Kid Comfort Venture Fit Adjustability Rating

As mentioned above, the Deuter Kid Comfort Venture features the VariQuick torso adjustment mechanism. In order to adjust the shoulder straps from a smaller wearer to a larger wearer you simply lift the velcro VariQuick tab, remove and reinsert into a higher level loop then fold down the velcro. When changing from one adult wearer to another make sure to readjust each of the straps including hip belts, load lifters, shoulder straps etc.

The torso adjustment on this baby carrier backpack can accommodate torso lengths 15-20 inches and the waist belt adjusts for 24-54 inch waists. While reviewing this baby carrier backpack we noticed that the hip belt straps were designed to be tightened by pulling out away from the body as opposed to the hip belt straps on the Deuter Kid Comfort Active where you pull towards your body. We prefer the hip belt strap tightening method on the Deuter Active as it is more intuitive and an easier motion.

Deuter Kid Comfort Venture Child Comfort: 5/10

As sold, the Deuter Kid Comfort Venture will be a comfortable ride for your child particularly on short trips. If you intend to use this baby carrier backpack for extended use like hiking or international travel we feel that the accessories are necessary for optimal child comfort. This baby carrier backpack includes a fully adjustable seat and relatively soft harness straps. Without the additional accessories we rate the child comfort of the Deuter Kid Comfort Venture as 5/10.

While comfortable, the child comfort rating for this pack would be higher with purchasing the removeable chin pad, foot stirrups and sun shade. With the accessories this baby carrier backpack rates 7/10 for child comfort.

Deuter Kid Comfort Venture Accessories (Sold Separately)

1. Removeable Chin Pad

Without the removeable chin pad the front of the child cockpit is firm with light colored material. This material would show stains immediately. The removeable chin pad provides a soft place for your child to rest their head as well as a removeable surface for washing. The chin pad clips into place with two metal clips on the front of the child cockpit and a toggle on each side of the inside of the child cockpit. The removeable chin pad costs $20 and can be purchased here.

2. Foot Stirrups

Off the shelf the Deuter Venture does not include foot stirrups. We feel that foot stirrups are critical to your child’s comfort for two reasons:

  1. They prevent your child’s feet from swaying with each adult step
  2. They provide a place to secure your child’s feet for better alignment and circulation

The Deuter foot stirrups are $10 and can be purchased here.

3. Sun Shade

If you have read our other reviews, you will notice that we are huge proponents of sun shades on baby carrier backpacks. They provide safety from the sun for your little one and often provide support while napping (discussed further below). The Deuter Kid Comfort Venture does not include a sun shade and in our opinion would need to be purchased separately. The Deuter Sun Roof is $35 and can be purchased here.

While this baby backpack carrier includes some padding in the child cockpit it is much less plush than others on the market and in our opinion the accessories are required to optimize comfort for your child passenger.

If you are interested in the Deuter Kid Comfort Series and looking for a simple yet effective child carrier that includes the chin pad and foot stirrups, take a look at the Deuter Kid Comfort Active (Review).

Deuter Kid Comfort Venture Child Safety: 7/10

Chicco SmartSupport Child Safety

Like all Deuter Kid Comfort child carriers, the Kid Comfort Venture has excellent safety features including a 5 point harness and a secure locking kickstand for safely placing the pack on the ground.

A few downsides in regards to child safety with this pack is the lack of foot stirrups to help with circulation and a general lack of padding for when things get a bit bumpy on the trail. In addition, the lack of sunshade does not provide protection from the sun.

Deuter Kid Comfort Venture Sun Protection: 4/10

When it comes to a child carrier backpack, a sunshade is one of the most important features. Young children can burn easily and a sunshade is the best way to keep them cool and protected.

In this case, the Deuter Kid Comfort Venture does not include a sunshade but is compatible with the Deuter Sun Roof. The sunshade is easy to install by inserting the two back posts into the sleeves on the upper back sides of the pack then clip the two forward clips to the pack in front of the child cockpit.  Unfortunately, we find the Deuter Sun Roof design lacking side panels for both sun protection and a place for your child to lean while napping.

For the backpack with the best sunshade, have a look at the Osprey Poco Plus (Review).

Deuter Kid Comfort Venture Nap Effectiveness: 5/10

Deuter Kid Comfort Venture Nap Effectiveness Rating

Nap time is critical for everyone while travelling or hiking with a little one. Baby carrier backpacks are a great place for your child to nap while on the go. The Deuter Kid Comfort Venture does not include most features required for a good nap in a baby carrier backpack.

The Venture is compatible with the Deuter Foot Stirrups, Deuter Removeable Drool Pad and Deuter Sun Roof. From our experience all three of these items are required for your child to take a good nap.

1. Foot stirrups provide a place for your child to lock their feet in. This prevents their feet from jostling while you walk and encourages better circulation.

2. The child cockpit on the Venture is bare bones and not particularly plush. The separate chin pad provides a soft place for your child to lay their head. It is also washable which is a huge benefit if your child eats in the pack.

3. As mentioned above, the sun shade helps prevent sun burns and keeps your child cool.

Without the additional items your child may be able to take a nap but, we would argue that it would not be the most comfortable or long nap.

Deuter Kid Comfort Venture Gear Storage: 6/10

Keeping in mind that the Deuter Kid Comfort Venture is a value driven model the gear storage is very minimal. The only storage included with this baby carrier backpack is a lower compartment with hook closure. We prefer zippered storage compartments on baby carrier backpacks in order to prevent items from falling out. The Venture does not include water bottle pockets, hip belt pockets or dedicated hydration bladder storage.

For comparison, a pack like the Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Elite is loaded with storage.  You can go for a full day hike, or even an international trip with all the storage it offers.  But, the Kelty model was designed to do just that, and is an overall larger pack.

Deuter Kid Comfort Venture Extra Features: 5/10

phil and teds parade extra features rating

Compared to the other Deuter models and other baby carrier backpack models at this price point, the Deuter Kid Comfort Venture is lacking when it comes to extra features. This child carrier backpack is designed to be value-driven without the extra bells and whistles and they accomplished this.

A benefit to the minimal design of the Deuter Kid Comfort Venture is the compact nature of the pack. This pack compresses pretty flat for travel and is not bulky in a crowd (make sure to push in the kickstand).

The Deuter Kid Comfort Venture includes all the standard features required for a child carrier and very little extra. Deuter offers a rain cover (purchased separately) for all of the Kid Comfort Series child carriers and we highly encourage purchasing this for use both in rainy conditions and cold/windy conditions. In order to use the rain cover you must purchase and engage the sun roof.

Deuter Kid Comfort Venture Durability: 9/10

Deuter is an industry leader in high end outdoor gear and uses the absolute best materials.  The Deuter Kid Comfort Venture is made with 600 denier polyester yarn made to be tear resistant and light weight.  The backpack frame is made of sturdy aluminum and the clips and straps are well made and built to last.

The Deuter Venture is backed by The Deuter Promise to repair any Deuter pack free of charge.

Deuter Kid Comfort Venture Value: 5/10

phil and teds parade value rating

Initially, the Deuter Kid Comfort Venture price tag is appealing as it is lower than other Deuter child carrier models. When you add the sun shade ($35), foot stirrups ($10), and removable drool pad ($20) the price goes from around $235 to $300. In our opinion, other Deuter Kid Comfort models that include all or most of these items are the better value and rate higher in overall comfort. As a standalone offering this pack is solidly built and includes the bare minimum in regards to features. Compared to other child carriers at this price point, the Deuter Venture falls short on value considering accessories are not included.

If you are looking for a baby carrier backpack with great value take a look at the Osprey Poco, Kelty Journey PerfectFit Signature and the ClevrPlus Urban Explorer.

Deuter Kid Comfort Venture Summary

In summary, our Deuter Kid Comfort Venture Review found this to be a high quality baby carrier backpack that is lacking extra features and less comfortable overall than others on the market. We like the look and overall feel of this baby backpack carrier and appreciate Deuter providing a lower cost child carrier option but feel that this pack would be best suited for short outings and not extended hiking or travel. If you prefer this design to others consider purchasing the available accessories to optimize child comfort for more extended activities.
